Procedures and rules for applying import permit on timber based products
  1. Applicant must first fill up the import permit application form at Permit & Licensing Unit, Forestry Department Headquarter.

  2. Application for Wood Based Products import permit, applications must attach a copy of the original invoice of the products to be imported.

  3. Application for sawn timber import permit, applicant must attach the following documents:
    • Original copy of the invoice of the products to be imported.
    • Application for sawn timber import permit from Sarawak, applicant must attach a copy of the Royal Malaysian Customs form (Declaration for exported goods – Customs no 2/ Pin 8/89) and the Certificate from STIDC/ PUSAKA (Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation/ Perbadanan Kemajuan Perusahaan Kayu Sarawak).
    • Additional terms for "general sawn timber" import permit:
      • A copy of the contract agreement between the supplier and the contractor who is given a project
      • A copy of the original invoice stating 50% of the general sawn timber was purchased from a local company/ sawmill
      • Only sawn timbers with the size of 2" x 3" or above are allowed to be imported. Sizes less than 2" x 2" can be       allowed if there are shortages of supply in the local market.

  4. Application for mangrove poles import permit, applicant must attach the following documents:
    • Original copy of the invoice of the products to be imported
    • Original copy of the Royal Malaysian Customs form (Declaration of exported goods – Customs no 2/ Pin 8/89) or from the authority of the exporting country.
    • Original copy of the "Forest Removal Pass" issued by the authority of the exporting country.
    • Only pole sizes of more than 4" (diameter) and 20' (length) are allowed to be imported, and must be unloaded at Petak 6 Kompleks Pemunggahan Bakau, Sg Belukut (by filling the available form with a rent of $100 for a period of one month) or any sites that are suitable with the approval by the Forestry Department).

  5. Application for restricted wood products under CITES (Convention on Trade of Endangered Species) list for example ramin and gaharu, applicant must attach the following documents:
    • Original copy of the CITES permit issued from the authorized agency of the exporting country.
    • Copy of the CITES permit issued from the Agriculture Department, Negara Brunei Darussalam (as CITES Management Authority) before the Forestry Department (as CITES Scientific Authority) can issue the import permit.
    • Original copy of the invoice of the products to be imported.
    • Application for import permit from Sarawak, applicant must attach a copy of the Certificate from STIDC/ PUSAKA (Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation/ Perbadanan Kemajuan Perusahaan Kayu Sarawak).
    • Original copy of the Royal Malaysian Customs form (Declaration of exported goods – Customs no 2/ Pin 8/89) or from the authority of the exporting country.

  6. Service charges for import products are $40 per consignment through sea, and $20 per consignment through land.
