 | In response to the increasing public demand for outdoor recreational opportunities, the Forestry Department has developed Forest Recreational Parks in strategic places in the country. These parks are, by design and purpose, established within forested sites. They are intended to serve a dual purpose. Aside from providing the public with venues for outdoor recreation, the parks are also used as vehicles to promote awareness on, and appreciation of, nature and forests among the people of Brunei Darussalam.
Thus, specific sites inside Forest Reserves which are accessible from population centres, and containing special natural features such as unique ecology, distinctive plants and animals, |
| | aesthetic landscapes, geologic and topographic formations, hydrologic attractions, and other interesting aspects have been developed into such parks. Basic park and utility facilities have been added to cater to the wide range of interests and activities of visitors to the parks.
At the end of the 6th NDP, the Department has completed, and opened to the public, the following Forest Recreational parks: | | Location | District | Total (Ha) | Developed (Ha) | Bt Shahbandar | Brunei-Muara | 234 | 69 | Berakas | Brunei-Muara | 348 | 10 | Sg Liang | Belait | 66 | 14 | Luagan Lalak | Belait | 275 | 5 | Sg Lumut | Belait | 200 | 10 |
| | A side from the above, the Departments has also initiated and party opened to the public the following Forest Recreational Park: | | Location | District | Total (Ha) | Developed (Ha) | Peradayan | Temburong | 997 | 10 | Bt Subok | Brunei-Muara | 15 | 10 | Selirong Mangrove | Temburong | 2,566 | 100 | Andulau Pine Valley | Belait | 77 | 5 |
| |
Even with the above parks already made available to the public, there is sites considerable demand for additional recreational sites. Some parks, like Bt.Shahbandar and Sg. Liang, have been getting very high visitation rates, almost exceeding their carrying or tolerance capacity. Thus, there is a need to establish more Forest Recreational Parks. Under the 7 h NDP, the Department has lined up the following strategic sites for development: | | Bt Saeh | Near Kampong Air, Brunei Muara | Bt Teraja | Labi, Belait | Badas | Seria, Belait |
